Project Overview
Built on a steep site at the head of a gully with a stream beneath. Building constraints of a stream covenant and stormwater/sewer easements provided a challenge for sitting the house.

It was designed to hover over the hillside, allowing light and ventilation on all sides. A stand of native kanuka trees protects the house and provides a backdrop from the inside. Clad in steel on the south side and dark timber cladding on the north. The living room and balcony cantilever out above the garage with views down the stream to the Pauatahanui inlet.

Passive House is a performance-based building certification that focuses on the dramatic reduction of energy use for space heating and cooling. It is a set of metrics for energy performance, a certification that can be achieved, and a philosophy for how to design and construct better buildings.
